Subject: Clarion CD/Head Unit CD's skip Can I want to change out the unit

I have a '89 9000T (129,000 miles) with the factory Clarion/CD/Head Unit/Equalizer Combination. It uses CD Caddies versus putting the CD in by themselves. I am noticing significant skipping on the CD's. When played on other players the CD's seem to work just fine. I have cleaned the CD's, and now think it is the Caddies. Can anyone shed light on the likelihood of the CD Caddies being the culprit as opposed to the CD player itself. If so, is there a fix? They are a pain and if I remember expensive too. Also, as an alternative---I want to give the car to my daughter, who would like to change out the existing CD player for something that doesn't use the caddies. I know that the whole unit is tied together and must be dealt with as one piece. Is there a replacement that anyone has had luck with in changing out the entire Head Unit/CD/EQualizer combination? If so, what are the options, and recommendations. Thanks DanG
