One thing you could do is take a ten litre petrol can with you and keep driving till you run out. Then tip in your ten litres, drive to the nearest station and fill up. Also squeezing the last 8 litres or so into a tank is a pain because of the breather tubes filling and tripping the pump nozzle, especially if you have the unleaded type of filler.
