Simon, I had an 83 900T 5 spd for over 13 years. Based on what you describe, especially with the short runs, it sounds more like your car was blowing out some built up carbon. Whenever I took mine in for service after 150,000 miles they always tried to tell me my Turbo was going. I called a place that rebuilds turbos. They told me not to worry until I was getting a steady stream of black smoke as well as loud bearing noises. If you are near a WalMart, Pep Boys or AutoZone, pick up a can of Berryman B-12 Chemtool and put it in with your next fill up. It will clean your fuel system, take care of moisture in the tank and clean up your valves too. I use a can about once every 90 days.
