To explain the "gun thing" in a nutshell (I have read too many O'Reilly books) is that it is a hot political issue, just like abortion. It is an issue that is used to polarize voters. If you asked most people, they probably would not have an opinion either way. You would also probably find that most of the people who say that the public should not have guns, have guns themselves. Carl Rowen was a vocal anti-gun TV personality in DC, where handguns are illegal, until he shot a tresspasser with an illegal handgun. Sharon Stone made a news event out of having the police come out to her house to pickup some guns she wanted to turn in. She did not turn in all of her guns, she used it as a publicity stunt. So the "gun thing" in the US is only what the politicians and news media use to get votes and boost ratings. Remember when it was "politically correct" to bash foreign cars, like Saabs and Toyotas, because it was un-American? You should have heard what some GM worker said about my Volvo.
