Stephen, for what it's worth, I'll speak as a 75-year-old person who has owned a 1988 SAAB 9000S since October 1987. I now have ~145,000 miles on it. the amount I have spent over these years in maintenance would describe a curve that is sharply upward. It has been a wonderful car, but I am beginning to see that I will shortly see the time when escalating repair costs will not warrant my continuing to keep it. I am a bit dismayed to see that you can get one in the mid-$3500 range, but that's reality, I guess. I paid in excess of $25,000 at the factory in Göteborg, Sweden. The car is one of the safest on the road, and in that regard, you could argue that your purchase is sound. Insurance costs are much more sensitive to issues such as liability and other compensation than they are to something like collision damage. I don't know about State Farm, which is said to be a good company (my insurer is USAA), but the question of insuring a 16-year-old is straightforwardly solved by comparison of rates. Safety is not always reflected in such a comparison. I hope you will send me e-mail about your (and your parents') decision.
