The "overflow" pipe to which you refer is actualy the vent pipe for the combustion gases that get past the piston rings - you should not remove it from the air cleaner as its part of the polution control - depending on which State / Country you are in this is highly illegal. BTW the later 16v's vented this upstream of the filter. Johann
