My current '97 900S has a similar lever, in a similar place. My knee whacks it open every couple of weeks, sometimes while driving, and the steering wheel suddenly can slide a couple of inches in or out. How safe can that be? My wife's 9-5 has a nice solution. The lever's up on the left side of the column, tucked away from knees. In the unlocked position, in addition to wheel in/out, it allows up/down movement. Very cool enhancement.
