Subject: Re: Reliability of late model Saab 9-5?

In July of 1998, my wife and I took delivery of a 9-5 sedan in Trollhättan, Sweden, and had it shipped back home to the U.S. It was a fantastic trip, and it's a great car. So far, it's been extremely reliable, and a kick to drive. You mention the notorious 900 electrical problems. My old '86 900S had 'em in spades. After 211,000 solid miles (without a tranny or motor rebuild), including quite a few triumphant snow and ice incidents that totally paralyzed other cars, I feel sheepish complaining about radios and dash lights. One funny story, though...I was getting a loud POP! in the stereo system every time I went over a bump. The dealer had my dash apart many times (this is what brings about early squeaks and rattles), and replaced countless DIN cables and wiring harnesses. They even rigged up an aluminum foil "shield" behind the left dash speaker, thinking the pop was a static discharge. Nothing helped. After living with this for months, it finally dawned on me that the sound only happened as the ass end of the car went over the bump. What part of the system was in the back of the car? It turned out to be the antenna. When I pulled aside the trunk lining and fished the wire for the power antenna motor out of the well, I saw that a mid-wire barrel connector was loose. I pulled it apart, pinched the sheath with pliers, snapped it back together (really tight, now), and the problem vanished. The service guy at the dealership offered me a job when I showed it to him. The 9-5's really nice. So's Sweden. Return e-mail address is bogus. Please keep replies within the group.
