Subject: Pongy "fresh" air in 9000

A friend has recently bought a superb 1993 9000 2.0 non-turbo with 105k on the clock, and aircon (which neither of has had before), from a UK Saab dealer. The problem is an intermittent smell from the fresh-air vents. He describes it as "metallic and dusty": it is apparently not the smell of leaking coolant. We have replaced the pollen filter as the old one was dirty and carried "the pong" It seems to be worse during cornering and at low fan speeds, and can appear whether or not the aircon is on. Similarly, it does not seem to matter whether the heater is set to hot, cold, or in between. Our thoughts are currently revolving around the aircon matrix box and its possible drainage, but we have no experience in this field, and Haynes does not appear to be much help. Any thoughts or tips would be much appreciated. Thanks Tony Atkinson
