It's very possible. If the head unit is not allowing enough power to the speakers and the amp, your sound will not sound so good. When I bought my '87 900 Turbo the system sounded incredibly crappy (couldn't hear the front speakers, rear speakers were hardly audible, if you had the windows or the sunroof open you couldn't hear anything) but I put a blaupunkt head unit in that put 68 watts at every speaker, and now it's very sweet. Actually got it for free out of a saab at my shop that nobody ever came to pick up.
