Subject: Brake rotors

Hoping there's someone knowledgeable out there who can tell me how much irregularity on brake rotor surface is acceptable and at what point they need to be replaced? Brought my '94 900SE in to the dealer for just a muffler replacement and next thing I know the service guy calls me back and is hitting me up for $400+ for a rotor and pad replacement. On the phone he says there is 1/8 inch gouges in the rotor surface (eek). I hesitate but say "okay, do it." When I pick up the car, I ask to see the old rotors. They had very slight surface irregularity if I ran my finger across them. Barely measurable, and probably an order of magnitude less than 1/8 inch. I paid him and left with the old rotors in hand. Trying to figure out if I was taken or not. Would appreciate the word on how much rotor surface irregularity is too much. Thanks, Barry (to reply by email, please remove "NOSPAM" from my reply address bee gee at albany dot net)
