Hi, Pls excuse what may be an obvious point, but are you checking to see that the whole outer yoke can slide back and forth? Try the following tests, being careful not to push the pistons too far outward: Push the piston for the inner pad into the housing, using a piece of wood as a lever (careful not to damage the dust seals). The piston on the other side (inboard) should push the yoke towards the car's centre line (as if to pull the outer brake pad against the disk). You can check movement the other way by wedging a piece of wood between the outer surface of the disk and the yoke (where the outer brake pad would sit) and twist it to get the yoke to move towards the outside of the car. Once you've established that both brake pistons and the yoke move, then installation of the pads should be easy. But it almost sounds as if the inner piston (the one that drives the yoke towards the car's centre line) on your brake is frozen. I've had that problem twice: once, because I was mucking around too much and managed to drive the piston out too far; the other time, because I hadn't changed my brake fluid in 5 years and the piston had rusted as a result. I also have had the situation where the outer pad had worn down to nothing (just the metal plate left) and this had caused the inner piston to hop out. I pulled apart the brake, redid all seals, lubricated yoke contact points with copper grease etc, refitted and bled hydraulics. Worked just like new. Again, excuse me if I'm stating too much of the obvious ;-) BTW I'm assuming that the 1986 brakes are Girlings (the same as on the 1983 non-turbo). Tell us how it goes.
