Subject: Re: whirring from fuel pump...

I don't think the reading on the fuel gage has anything to do with the fuel pump. My 85 has a loud fuel pump, too. It got noticably louder last year and I found that the engine would start to stall out when I started from a stop (manual transmission). Anyway, I replaced the prepump (there are two fuel pumps in the tank) and the "extra" loud noise went away, as did the stalling. You might want to change the prepump. Its pretty cheap. I think the pump cost me $35 (in Massachusettes). And its really easy to change. Beats being towed when the pump totally fails. The main pump is very expensive (something like $400). Also easy to change yourself. But I'm told the prepumps are made cheaply (hence their cheap price) and fail often, so its likely the problem. Keep your ear on the noise. It will probably get worse before it fails, but it might fail pretty quickly once the noise changes. Good luck! mark On Sun, 9 Apr 2000 20:05:16 -0500, "jel1" <jelzicnopsamorktel.net> wrote: >I have a 1988 900 that is making a whirring sound from the back by the fuel >pump.
