I agree that changing the fluid and filter is a good start. It is also a good idea to keep some of the fluid you drain so you can show it to an auto transmission specialist. They can tell quite a lot from the fluid. Unfortunately these transmissions do not last well. I've had 2 replaced on my 1988 9000T in the last 6 years. The second time was mainly due to an internal leak in the radiator letting water into the transmission fluid. This then attacks the brake bands and clutches so you lose drive.
