TR, I have noticed that when I have both front passenger vents shut off, the temperature in the rear vent outlets get's hot! (in vent and bi-level distribution mode) I asked my dealer if they know anything about this, they gave me the information I had already discovered myself (above). Then dealer told be it is OK to close one of the two passenger front vents, but not both! They told me, also, that there is a fix for this, but I will see if just closing one vent is good enough before I decide. Could this be the case that you have both passenger front vents closed? Do you know what distribution mode you have when you experience the problem (ambient temp. set temperature on the control panel?).
