Uh, this is totally off the wall, mentioned only because of the superficial similarity of symptoms: in the early 70s the Austin Mini 1000 I then owned had a speedo which fluttered rather than give a steady reading. It did this for a short while, then the speedo cable broke. I suspect strands in the Bowden (?) cable's inner "shaft" were twisting about in a complicated fashion as it turned and they broke. Probably SAABs are so different as to make the above irrelevant. :-( -- Andrew Stephenson
