Indeed they do, and indeed they break and make a mess. The valve cover gasket usually leaks about every third year, so this is a good time to check the chain. I have seen them last for 200k with good maintenace, but I try to change them at 100k for insurance purposes. A chain, tensioner and VC gasket are cheap compared to a head set, valves and machine work. Not to mention being stranded. JPF There are a couple of choices depending on year, but the chain runs 25-ish, the gasket 10-ish, the tensioner 20-ish. It's a good idea to replace the guide on the VC gasket at this time as well, as it usually has some pretty good grooves worn in it, 8-ish. As you can see, the parts are less than a tow, so it would be foolish to risk it, especially if you have been less than faithful about oil services.
