The problem is the 2nd gear Syncro Ring/Spring combination. This is quite common and will go for a good while if driven moderately. The engine and transmission does not have to come out. You can remove the transmission from the bottom and rebuild it without removing the engine. Rebuilding it at a factory authorized Saab Dealer should cost about 1100.00. I have probably built in the neighborhood of 100 of these transmissions. I am a Saab Mastertech from www.thesaabsite.com Please let us know if we can help further! Mastertech!
