Subject: question: leaky power steering rack

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a temporary fix for a leaky power steering rack on my '86 900. I have been sort of babying it along for 3-4 years, but it has recently started to leak at a rate such that the spillage can be seen on the street after parking overnight. Until now, the reservoir would need to be topped off every few months, but there was no evidence of the leak to be seen in the parking space. I had been using whatever Saab specified as appropriate (GM power steering fluid?), but a quickie oil change place added generic steering rack fluid about 2500 miles ago and I am concerned that this may have hastened the leak. Or perhaps it was going all along and the timing is merely coincidental? The only other theory I can come up with is that the summer heat has lowered the viscosity of the fluid, making it more prone to leaking through the failing seals. Anyhow, from the reading I have done the concensus is that a steering rack replacement is in order. Given that my car is just under 200K, I would probably opt for a rebuilt rack (suggestions on price?) However, if I'm faced with replacing the rack, is it worth first trying some sort of additive to slow the leakage? The leak seems to be coming from around the driver side suspension; should I be looking at any particular seals or the reservoir? Well, thanks in advance for any suggestions that you may be able to offer. Regards, --Matt Sattler
