Subject: Re: Turbo?

Hi, A factor to consider (apart from all the ones posted earlier on this thread) is the lower compression ratio of the turbo motor in general. I have no 9000 specs, but on the classic 900 8v, the ratios are 9.5:1 for a non-turbo, 8.5:1 for an APC turbo and 7.2:1 for a pre-APC turbo. Source for this data is my old trusty Haynes from ca. 1985. Some people in this NG talk about piling on extra head gaskets to lower the compression ratio, but that sound dodgy at best. OTOH has anyone out there tried this trick and got it to work? My view is that if you don't consider yourself to be an expert at handling these kinds of mods, you may get frustrated solving some of the nastier problems you'll be sure to get later on ;-) If you want to go at it yourself though, the best way to start may be your alternative B, but you may have more joy if you buy a used car with turbo as original spec, and fix that one up instead. I know that in Sweden, the Motor Testing Authority (Svenska Bilprovningen) put you through all sorts of paperwork and expenses if you does this kind of thing to their car . . . you may have the same mess in Finland?
