Very interested to read all the replies to a simply put, accurate gripe. I must admit I agree, the sign is there for safety reasons, and it is negligent for its use in the manual to conflict with its actual operation. Just a thought though, I live in the UK, and I had a 94 NG900 Turbo which operated in the same way - the light went out when I did up my belt regardless of passenger status. However I have recently upgraded to a brand new 2000 model 9-3SE convertible. Now the sign does indeed seem to be connected somehow to the passenger seat, for if I belt up and am alone, the sign goes out. However, if I have a passenger it stays lit until they have done the same. It would seem to be pressure or weight sensitive as I have before wrapped a belt around my laptop, which also registers as a passenger if I leave it on the seat! For the record, it's a 9-3SE lpt, 2000 model year with heated leather seats. H.
