The cat does not rob horse power. The problem is the 85 900 non turbo 8 valve engine was fitted with very high gearing. I had one of these cars back in 1991. I fitted the transmission primary gears out of an 83 trans solved problem. at the time I was commuting over the Santa Cruz mountains to San Jose and the extra torque was needed to climb those hills.Before the gear change just like you said down shifting trying to keep up some speed.
