Sorry my idea wasn't more helpful, hadn't visualized how long the canoe is. Most of my ideas when I thought about it had to do with deflecting the wind so it wouldn't be so much of a problem rather than some draconian modification of the car. How about this... Would a cover over the top (top being relative to when it is on the water) of the canoe interfere with the rack and keep it from catching quite so much wind. I'm thinking of a canvass or similar cover like some use on motorboats when not in use. Maybe helpful, hopefully, Tony in Fort Worth 86 9000T remove 'saab' from address to reply by email. p.s. if you do go from bridge to carrier, be sure there's a movie crew there so you'll get enough to buy a replacement saab.
