Subject: How do you feel about Abortion? Gay Rights? Gun Control?

How do you feel about Abortion? Gay Rights? Gun Control? Most people don't vote for the President with the Supreme Court in mind, but consider this: in July the Supreme Court split 5-4 on a crucial vote, striking down a Nebraska law that banned partial birth abortions. That one-vote margin is important, because the next President is likely to nominate two to four Justices- enough to transform the court on abortion and other key issues, from affirmative action to gay rights to gun control. This election could possibly do nothing less than decide whether or not a woman's right to choose is taken away. While this might sound like the usual campaign rhetoric, it's not. Three of the Justice's nearing retirement - John Paul Stevens (80), Sandra day O'Connor (70), and Ruth Bader Ginsburg (67) - belong to the court's pro-choice majority. All three have recently battled cancer. If Stevens and O'Connor step down during a Bush administration, Bush has already stated he will appoint conservative, pro-life Justices. The 6-3 majority in favor of choice could become a 5-4 majority in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade. Some scholars don't believe that even a pro-life court would buck public opinion and ban abortion. Personally, given what is possibly at stake, I'm not willing to take that chance. When asked about his biggest mistake in office, Eisenhower replied, "I made two, and they're both sitting on the Supreme Court." I think the Republican Convention is already indicative of the fact that the Republican Party will say or do whatever is necessary to obtain a Republican in the White House, even lie or distort the facts. The parade of African Americans, even one homosexual (a group the Republicans have never even tolerated, let alone welcomed into their party), should indicate the exhaustive measures the Republican Party is willing to go to in order to convince voters they are more compassionate. It almost seems as though they're desperately trying to behave like Democrats!
