Hi, I also have a 1996 900 SE and I have had problems with the reverse ring. It is really just a piece of plastic and a guide. If you unsnap the leather boot that goes around the shifter you will see that there is really nothing to it. My problems was that I could put the car in reverse without lifting the ring up. The repair center replaced the entire transmission because of it. They say that the transmission was dead. I seriously doubt that. Anyhow, yeah take a peak beneath that leather boot and you will see that it is very simple. There might actually be more to that whole thing, but that is all that I could see in my brief inspection.
