Some filters have a non return valve built into them that prevents the filter from draining into the sump after the engine is switched off, other filters do not have such a valve. At least for the two digit SAAB types (2 stroke and V4 - 92 93 95 96 97) such a non return filter is recommended as at a cold start there will immediately be oil at the bearings etc, instead of the oil pump having to fill the drained oil filter first, leaving all moving parts with insufficient lubrication during the first 20-30 seconds or so. -- MH ('77 96 '78 95 '79 96 '72 97) http://go.to/saab96
