Hi Tom, A few years ago we had the same 5th gear problem you are describing with a '89 900. After being told anything from rebuilding to replacing the transmission, someone mentioned to change the transmission oil to be sure it had 10W-30 motor oil (not gear oil) in it. We figured, why not, it was easy enough to do. The problem went away and the car has been driven another 60k miles since and shifting is still fine. So, before you get into it too deep, give it a try, maybe you get lucky too.
