Subject: Re: gearbox question

Well, to replace the pinion bearings they have to remove the gearbox from the car, so you would get the work for the clutch replacement for "free", just the cost for the new clutch, so i would recommend that. The question of changing the whole gearbox vs. changing the pinion bearings is more difficult to answer, I am not so good at manual transmissions, I have had most of my cars with auto, but i would go for the whole gearbox if itīs not to expensive compared to changing only the bearings. /Mats On Sat, 26 Aug 2000 04:31:12 GMT, alex carruthers <arcarrnopsamsplanet.net> wrote: >hi >i have a 91 9000S with 270,000k, mostly highway, original engine, >gearbox, clutch > >i have a slightly noisy 5th gear when the engine is pulling > >saab shop says replace pinion bearing for 5th (& for 4th) gear > >but then says 'by the time we do this we may as well replace the >gearbox, and the clutch' > >question: do i just replace the pinion bearings; or re-build the gearbox >and do the clutch? > >thx > >alex c >
