Subject: '95 9000 CSE Electrical Problems

My 1995 9000 CSE has developed a problem where sometimes when I turn on the lights, the car dies. After that, it cranks and cranks but will not catch. While driving home today, I noticed that my voltage (normally ~14) was down to 9.5 and when I turned on the lights, it died. Once I got it started again, the voltage only reads 6.5, and the gages keep flicking on and off. What is going on here? My first thought was that the alternator is gone. How dificult is it to replace myself? With only 6.5 volts left in my battery, I don't think I can drive all the way to the repair shop. Any advice would be appreicated. Thanks, -Chris R.
