My 1997 900 doesn't use oil either. Although I would recommend an oil change every six months just to keep the crap down in the oil. Our local Budget (aka KwikFit) will do an oil and filter change for less than 10GBP - saves you getting your hands dirty and keeps the old bird sweet as when you got it.
