To me this sounds like the evaporative loss system (I think that's what it's called). There is a hose that runs from the fuel tank to the engine compartment and exhausts evaporated fuel (that normally would be released into the atmosphere) into a big canister. The canister collects the fuel fumes and slowly introduces them back into the throttle. (I believe this happens at part-throttle.) The hose from the fuel tank to the canister actually goes through the headliner on the left-hand side. (If there is a problem with the hose you may get that fuel smell in the passenger compartment.) It may be that the system is dumping it's contents into your trottle instead of slowly releasing it. Does anyone know how often this canister should be replaced? There's a great explanation of this system in the Bentley manual. Dusan.
