In article <Pine.SGI.4.21.0009190918360.10609758-100000nopsam.oulu.fi>, Terho Kohonen <tkohonennopsam.student.oulu.fi> writes >I have 9000i '89 which has now 312 000 km. I have a 9000i '89 which has now 243,000 km. > I have had the car for 20000km >and the biggest worry so far is the engine noise. When cold, it makes a >rattling (diesel-like) noise. I don't have this - once it is warm it is pretty quiet. >But what might be the cure for these sounds? Changing the timing chain or >something bigger and more expensive? Could some products (e.g Forte engine >flush) prolong the engine's life and make the noise smoother? The car has >had Shell's synthetic oil which has been changed after 10000km. According to a mechanic, who listened to the engine for me when I first bought the car, the crankshaft bearings are dying. I don't actually believe him, and have a touching faith in the manual, which states that the cam followers make this noise on start-up, and that it is nothing to worry about. It remains to be seen which of us is correct (and I'm not betting on me). She sometimes wondered who would pay for it and who would heed." - from "Harvest of Stars" by Poul Anderson.
