Check for 'droopiness' of the front transmission mount. This can cause the front of the engine to be angled down slightly and bind slightly the shift shaft. I replaced mine and noticed improvements. It would occasionally pop out of 1st and 3rd and doesn't anymore. It is smoother shift action as well.
