Subject: Re: Doubts about the 9-3's "nervousness"

Andrew, You dont say quite where in the UK you are based, but as a chap in Birmingham, I preyed upon Concept Saab to allow me to test drive virtually every model of 9-3 they had! I wanted to change from my 94 900 Turbo to a 9-3 Coupe / Convertible. My 900, having been the 5-dr, had 15", the Coupe 16 and the Convertible 17". This was just at the time (April this year) of the appearance of the Airflow kit (bodykit + standard 17") The 900 was fairly jiggly, but I put this down more to lacklustre suspension than anything else. The 9-3 Coupe was at least as bumpy a ride as my 900 if not ever so slightly more so. The Convertible with its admittedly good looking 17" was awful. Even taking into account the scuttle shake of the convertible as opposed to a hard top, it skittered around the road like nobodies business. Even in central Birmingham it was a nightmare. I wouldn't even consider visiting my sister in the Lake district in THAT! The upshot was I went back and tried the same models, but with different wheels. Having fallen for the Convertible - as one does on a rainy British April day - I settled for an SE with 15" wheels. The ride is now compliant and as smooth as can be expected of a rag-top, and the handling is up to anything I can throw at it (drifts, silly cornering, complete lack of respect for oncoming Cumbrian sheep etc) If you're in Bham, let me know, and I might just trust you to take it for a spin.....
