Subject: Shifting Problem in 2K 9-3

This issue had been addressed earlier last month. It was regarding a problem with Saab 9-3 manual transmissions not shifting correctly. I found the problem. Last night, I had my neighbor start my car while I was installing a sport exhaust. I asked him to take it out of reverse, let off the clutch and give it a few revs and then proceeded to explain to him that the car has to be in reverse to get the key back out of the ignition. Bad Mistake. Like every other non-Saab person I've ever met, he tried jamming the stick into reverse. I told him about the button underneath the shift knob and instead of pushing the button in with his fingers, he decided to pull up on the whole shift boot and then jam it into reverse. This is where the problem began. All of a sudden, the only gears I could get into were 1st and 3rd. I slipped into 2nd somehow and had to limp home (In second) because I couldn't get out. Just on the verge of calling Saab road assistance, I noticed that the stick had some freeplay up and down. In other words, you could pull the stick up about 3 inches...it was not in any kind of 'socket'. Then it hit me. I did the opposite of what my dumbass neighbor had done. I pushed the stick down (it had an unnatural tendency to spring up), held the button in and shifted into reverse. That was it, nothing more. Problem solved. I'll never let anyone behind the wheel of my Saab again. Brian -- delinquent1nopsamdnet.att.net Return to Main Index
