The thump was fuel sloshing around in the tank. It has happened in the 9-5 since it was introduced. My 99 9-5 sedan does it also. It happened when there was just the right amount of fuel in the tank, stopping quickly, and a full moon on Friday. I guess enough people complained that they have found a fix. By putting something in the tank to baffle the sloshing, you shouldn't hear the noise any more. As soon as my local Saab service place hires a new tech, I'll drop by and see about getting it put in my car.
