Problem is, this is beginning to look like a cycle!-- I bought the car with (only) 86,000 miles in Sept. '99. The owner put in a rebuilt tranny at around 50K -- I thought I was already safe! -- He said the previous owner didn't know how to drive a stick. (But, *I* know how to drive a stick!) Then, last April I sunk $1,000 in a total clutch/master/slave intsall. ("A spring on a shaft broke and lodged somewhere and threw a bearing somewhere?) It was one, frozen, mess. It only went less than a thousand miles (after that) before the tranny went out last week. I suppose the tranny was 'stressed' by the clutch problem? Thus, this is the third tranny and two clutches in under 90,000 miles!?!?! (I believe a new clutch went in the rebuild at 50K as well....) Since the used tranny only has 60K and is 1/3 the cost of a rebuild ($1,200 versus $3,400) , I have to take a chance. Jeeze, the last guy sunk four grand in a rebuild and it still only went 25,000 miles! Seems like the big 'IF' is: IF the other parts are ok -- 'eh? Clearly, the drive train is 'ususally' the most expensive and at least that will be in fairly decent shape. Also, if ya have an older SAAB it is almost necessary to have access to a good, non-dealer mechanic. Not that the dealer wants to soak me -- but I really need an alternative to 'new parts' if I only put on a few thousand miles a year.
