The gauge could have been removed? I really don't think that a N/A 8 valve could move that fast. I could very well be wrong. A 16 valve N/A has 125HP while a stock SPG has 165HP (at least for '88. Not sure what year this one was). With a little APC tweak, you can easily see 200 HP. Just a possibility.
