Subject: Re: How reliable is Borg-Warner auto in '92 900S?
Sluggish. I only own manuals, but my father swears by automatics and cannot
understand why I would WANT to shift. It is different preferences and MOST
of the purchases in the US have automatics across the board. I feel that if
you want to keep it going as long as possible, a maintenance program is in
order. You only have 88kmi on it now. Has the fluid been flushed regularly?
If not, I would embark on such a plan. I have heard of 30kmi flush
intervals. The 9k also has a poor reputation for its auto as well and the
one in my father's is still running strong, shifts solidly, etc at 135kmi.
The S is probably a bit easier on it as it doesn't have the HP of the Turbo.
The general design is a bit dated and not as advanced as current offerings
(3 sp. vs. 4 or 5 sp autos currently) it does not have electronic control or
a lock up torque converter. All of which detract from its sportiness, but it
should work fine if you want a cruiser or live in an area where sitting in
traffic is the norm. If you like it and it still works, just give it a bit
of TLC and it should last a while.
