The advice given to many 900 owners, often too late, is to put the shifter into 3rd gear first, then reverse. I assume you know that reverse is not a synchromesh. Try this and see if the whirring/rasping noise disappears. If you ever have a valet driver park you car, you should definitely let the driver know about the 3rd gear before reverse, or else someone will be paying for a transmission repair - probably you.
