Subject: Re: Viggen vs base 9-3 differences?

Bob Mauri (rjmnopsamlaw.com) wrote: : I think that the Viggen is quite a bit different than the base 9-3 (or even : the 9-3 SE). The Viggen has better seats, a different engine (with higher : boost levels and--I think--a different turbo), a different exhaust, : Automatic Climate Control, a different suspension, better brakes, free : service for 3 years (other than oil changes at certain intervals), 17 inch : rims and tires, different engine management system (I believe), and better : steering wheel. I'm not sure about the transmission. It also has a chromed : exhaust tip, a rear spoiler, body molding, a better stereo, and power seats : (driver's with memory). There's more, but I cannot remember it all. Maybe my question was unclear - I'll try to rephrase it. Well, of the above, I can live with the differences in seats, chromed exhaust tips, and similar if I can get the horsepower. I'm hoping more to see "The transmission is the same, but the final drive ratio is different by (x), it's the same turbo but the wastegate is tweaked to (y), and the injection computer has to be upgraded to (Z)" type of thing. The seats, nicer stearing wheel, and all that are things that really don't add value for me; I'm more interested in the performance than in the fluff. : Is it worth the difference in price between the two cars (especially : considering that there have been dealer incentives on the base and SE but : not the Viggen -- at least lately)? You could be talking a difference of : perhaps 16,000 dollars, depending on what options are on the base model, : what you can get for an incentive, and when you buy. My recommendation: : drive both, determine what your budget is, then decide. 16 grand is a LOT to add on, just to get the extra performance. Since that's the only reason I'd be going for the Viggen, I'm having a hard time justifying that, even to myself (let alone to my wife...). But, if I could spend 1/3 of that to get the same performance, by upgrading a base 9-3, that would be ideal. If the transmission is different, or the turbo, or something major along those lines, that would limit my options. Dave Hinz
