It's nice, reassuring feedback that the brake lights are on when they're supposed to be. Of course, one could use the pictogram, since it flashes half the time one applies the brakes. I've heard (well, I've read) other explanations, from relays to vacuum devices, but at least in my case, the click comes from the brake light switch. On my '89 9000, the brake pedal has two switches, and the lower one does not click when operated, so I'd say it's possible to have a switch and no click, but there's an easier fix: Turn the radio up.
