I personally use EMACS, but I have to say that if you can't get your editing done in vi, it is not worth doing. vi is a full-featured and extremely small-footprinted editor. Are you trying to tell me you are more of a computer scientist than Bill Joy, or that you are unable to edit a file without assistance from a talking paperclip? >> Windows filesharing >>(via SAMBA) that outperforms NT, Perl, Python, StarOffice, GIMP, >>more than twenty different window managers, rock-solid databases like >>PostgreSQL, > databases like what ? Funny, I haven't see that one down at > the corporate d/b shop. Where do you work? I run PostgreSQL right along with Oracle on Sun Enterprise 4500 and 10000 hardware - guess what, the users prefer PostgreSQL. Oh yeah, NASA just booted Oracle in favor of (what's that?) MySQL. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you don't consider Access XP, er, Microsoft "SQL" to be a true RDBMS. >> one of the world's most intelligent >>user communities, > Yeah, 17 year olds are great support. So, in addition to being a better scientist than Bill Joy, you are superior to RMS, Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox, the IBM team that created AIX 5L, the kernel developers, Larry Wall, Felix Gallo... the list goes on and on. Point-and-clickers need not apply, and snickering doesn't change the fact that Windows is the OS of choice for people who are one step away from being developmentally handicapped. >>There is not a single *serious* computing tool that is not done, and >>done better, on the Linux/*BSD platforms. > Too funny. Disprove the statement. Saying it's "funny" doesn't change anything. I think running untested, untrusted binaries from Microsoft is "too funny". I think being a slave to a license policy that makes you lick Bill Gates's boots is "too funny". Face it - Windows is to computing in general what AOL is to Internet usage - slow, stupid, feeble, inscrutable by legal decree, and a virtual Mark of The Idiot Beast on one's forehead. However, I do not pity you so much as I suggest that you free yourself of the chains of restrictive licensing. Visit www.gnu.org and learn what computing really is. It's not WinNT, IE5, porn surfing, Quake playing, "B2BJ2EEB2C-Enterprise-Beans-ODBC" crap - it's information and knowledge. And all of it should be free, even to people who don't grasp the concept...
