I have a 1999 SAAB 9-5 SE V6. 17,400 miles. It has had its share of minor problems: a glitch in the air conditioning that ultimately needed a redesigned part, a few adjustments here and there. None of the problems to date have affected the mechanical reliability of the car. Some of them probably wouldn't have been reported by a less fussy owner. Compared to other cars I've owned, it's been incredibly reliable. I have also been in one accident with the vehicle. That accident caused US $15,000 of damage to my SAAB in a front end, moderate-speed collision. After the accident, I thought the car would be a goner. The paramedics were astounded that I did not want to be taken to the hospital after looking at the car. I walked away with NO INJURIES... not even a bruise. The car suffered no frame damage and no engine damage past the radiator bulkhead, and has been fully repaired with no change in its handling. I can tell you, SAAB's safety reputation is not exaggerated. If I had been in any other car I've owned, I would have been hospitalized. The Saab didn't even give me a friction burn from the seatbelt. It's an incredible feeling to realize, "this car will not let me die easily." Add that on top of spaciousness, a trunk of astounding capacity, luxury, fits-like-a-glove ergonomics, and "I'm going HOW fast?!" handling... and I think SAAB makes the BMW look overpriced and pretentious. -- Rob Levandowski roblnopsamhiz.com (Opinions expressed are solely my own and not a statement from my employer)
