Subject: Re: 84 900 Front Damper Tips?

An air wrench works very well. Whatever you do, don't put grips on the damper rod (even with an insulating rag), as this will likely damage the finish, and eventually destroy the rod seals. Be sure to replace the rubber donuts on both sides of the damper tower in the frame, and check the condition of the washer brazed on the bottom of the tower. On my old '84 900S, the hole in the washer had enlarged sufficiently to allow the rubber donuts to pull through it - this wasn't at all obvious upon a visual inspection while the damper was still mounted. It's fairly easy to braze new hardened washers in. Good luck!
