Subject: Re: Annoying (and worrying) oil Leak - '91 9000

Let's start with ticking sound. The hudraulic tappets take a little time to pump up. On some engines it's maybe 10 seconds, on others it could be a few minutes. As long as the ticking noise goes away after a few minutes, I wouldn't worry about it. As for the oil leak, have you changed your type of oil recently? ie. from standard to synth? That often cases a lot of oil leaks, by shrinking seals. Fact is, 90% of saabs over 5 years old leak. All my saabs (1 x 99, 9 x 900, 1 x 9000) have leaked. It all depends on the severity of the leak. If it's a few drops overnight, don't worry about it. Even if it's more than that, as long as it isn't gushing out, just check the oil regularly, top up, and leave. Next time you're having work done on the car, get seals replaced. So if you're having the clutch done, get the rear seal replaced. If your crank pulley is being replaced, get the front seal done. Good luck, and check that oil level!
