Subject: Re: SAAB 9-3 versus BMW 3 series

Last fall I fulfilled a childhood dream and got a '97 900SE (2.0 turbo). Meanwhile, my most car-savvy friend is totally addicted to BMWs. He's more into performance, all aspects - acceleration, braking, handling. And I think he's right that in general, BMWs are more serious in that regard; both his project car ('90 325is) and status car ('97 M3) feel faster off the line, nimbler, and quicker to stop than my 900, and since they have bigger engines without turbos, available torque is more immediate and predictable. But I adore my car. It suits my driving style, it handles great around town, and it's got enough juice on the freeway that I need the audible speed alarm to tell me I've just popped from 65 to 85 by tapping on the gas. I enjoy my commute in it immensely (I wish I lived farther from work), and it holds the wife, dog, and everything we need for a weekend away very comfortably. Last comment: by all means test drive one and see how you like the ergonomics. Slightly different from many other cars; some people think better, some think worse. -Will D.
