Subject: Re: looking for advice on buying a 900

I had an '86 and I now own a '90. I sold the '86 to a teenager who promptly got into two accident, but the car is still on the road. Here are my opinions of the classics. 1. If you don't want to pay $200 a headlight, buy an '86 or older - these models used the standard headlights you can buy for $9 each. 2. If you want the parking brake on the rear wheels, for parking safety and for locking the rear wheels while changing tires, buy an '87 or newer. You can also do hand brake turns with the parking brake on the rear wheels. 3. The classic has real rain gutters - and there are many used roof rack systems to hold bikes, boats, skis etc available for almost nothing. Try pricing a new roof rack system for the new cars without rain gutters, you could buy a classic 900 for the price of a nice roof rack system. 4. If you want a turbo, buy the newer classics - the early turbo bearing were not water cooled 5. If you can find one, get the manual windows - it is funny watching people try to figure out how to crank open the windows. I want to find one with right hand steering - that would be a sight to see an American trying to parallel park this car! 6. Watch the CV boots!!! - I learned the hard way how expensive it is to replace the joint if you run it too long without any grease. 7. Have fun with the car, they handle great in the snow and typically are inexpensive enough to not worry about salt/rust damage. "M.W.E.
