IMHO, it's a matter of design / attitude rather than quality. US companies (in the majority, there are exceptions...) build disposable vehicles, in keeping with the American preference for flashy, relatively low-cost, non-durable items. European companies tend to follow the European convention of relatively basic, but long-lived, solid and safe vehicles which are probably good value over the long-run but higher priced initially. Many other European products seem to follow the same pattern (take a look at a stainless steel-lined Bosch washer compared to your average Kenmore...) Hence, you can buy a fully-equipped Taurus with electrically adjustable pedals for half the price of a smaller Mercedes. The Taurus is much better in the snow, but the wipers may self-destruct if you leave then on high too long (speaking from experience). The Mercedes will last forever, but hold on to your wallet if you ever need to repair the climate control system (again from experience). In the end it's all about compromises. I have Michelin tires on my Windstar because I was fed up with the self-distructing Goodyears, a Saab 900 convertible for the nice days and a couple of older Subarus for the snowy days.
