Subject: Water in engines ( for "Vikingman")

I seem to be only able to see 41 messages! and would like to respond to some criticism of an original posting by "vikingman"; And what John says about water and blowing engines: "suck in any water (if > you went through a deep puddle) and you can kiss your engine goodbye!" This > is simply NOT true!!! And engine will diegest (spelling!?) the small > waterdrops and actually give more power. Have you ever heard of > water-injection? Much used on Saab turbo's as it keeps the temp down in the > engine AND contains much more oxygen-molycules, so that the engine has more > to work with! > Err sorry - if you suck water into the engine (like if you scooped up some water from a deep puddle with a stupid ground level intake!) it will cause a condition known as 'hydraulic lock' (liquid not being compressible like gas) which will cause at least a blown gasket and more likely a con rod to go through the crank case! Water injection is a completely different thing - water is sprayed into the intake in fine particles and mixes with the fuel/air mixture. As it is drawn into the hot cylinder it turns to steam which lowers the charge temperature and allows combustion without pre ignition or pinking. It is this conversion of water particles (liquid) into steam (vapor) which 'sucks the heat energy from the air/fuel mixture. It has nothing to do with water containing oxygen molecules - have you tried to burn water lately? - and no there is no separation of water into oxygen and hydrogen in the combustion cycle. John
